Summary
Thanking Lane for sending him the novel Widdicombe by M. P. Willcocks; commenting on the author's gender: "So the author is a Miss Wilcocks, is she? The things these unmarried ladies know & write about nowadays are past belief : well, she has a touch of genius certainly, and they say genius knows things without experience;" discussing an anthology of writings about sleep and saying that Lane now has both his and Miss Godden's contributions; describing the purpose of the anthology as "to bring together as many as possible of the beautiful things, - and they are some of the most beautiful in the world, - which the poets have written about sleep;" saying that the anthology will incorporate the text of a similar book compiled by Peter Leslie and will be illustrated by Leslie; adding that he isn't sure about the likelihood of commercial success, "but I know it will make a beautiful anthology of its special kind. But will it be worth while submitting it to you again, since what you have seen takes your fancy so little?"; writing that he sees that Bodley Head is bringing out a new volume of poems by "Phillips" (probably Stephen Phillips) and asking whether it consists simply of reprints, "or is there anything new in it, & if new, good? And has he pulled himself really together again at all? He has kept away from me for a long time, whence I augur no good -."
