John Pond was an English astronomer and as the sixth Astronomer Royal (1811-1835) Pond oversaw a considerable modernization of the Observatory at Greenwich.

Summary
Discussing the observation "of longitude at sea independent of any Affidavit;" describing, in detail, his methods of calculation; sending him part of a journal he kept from an observation in 1776 which shows his methods; adding that during that time he had "invented a Table intended to simplify the correction of lunar distances on account of variations in the barometer and thermometer; doubting that this table will be of value to him, but asking that he look at it.
