Signed "Lanark." William Hamilton was created the Earl of Lanark in March 1639. He inherited the title of Duke of Hamilton in 1649.

The letter is not dated, however, according to the Duke of Hamilton's biography in the DNB, Lanark supervised the distribution of gifts and honors to the Scottish political elite in 1646. It is possible this was the year of writing.
