Concerning letters of introduction; saying "I send your parcel of Papers which I know you wish to lend to Mr. Law. I have looked over such as I had not seen before. I also take the liberty of asking you to look at the accompanying List of letters of introduction which we have at present. If you can give us one or two more I feel confident they will advance our objects. I cannot adequately express how much flattered I feel by the unreserved confidence of your conversation - I trust you will never have any occasion to think it indiscreetly bestowed. My sole wish is to get at the bona fide truth in this great Terra Incognita - & though I feel that the subject is one requiring as many years as I can give it months - I must do what my limited means allow - & therefore it is that I value so highly the sort of intimacy you are so good as to admit me to."
