Address panel with a small fragment of a seal to "Dr. Walker / Salisbury Square."
The letter is simply dated "Walworth, Wednesday / afternoon" however reference is made to the need for a "new vaccine establishment." After a dispute with Jenner, the London Vaccine Institution was formed in August 1806. Walker resigned his position at the Jennerian Society on Friday, August 8, 1806.
The identity of Thomas Hardy is uncertain, however it appears from Reports published by the Royal Jennerian Society, of which Mr. John Walker was the Director, that a Thomas Hardy was one of the Board of Managers and was, according to an asterisk beside his name "...of the Medical Profession and form[s] the Medical Council."
The address to which this letter is sent was the address that housed the Jennerian Society and also the London Vaccine Institution formed in August 1806 after a dispute with Jenner.
Summary
Concerning the need for a new vaccine institute; saying "You know that our enemies have obtained a victory, which must inevitably give them success on Friday. Mess. [John]Adolphus, [Knight]Spencer, [John] Fox, Bowman & myself are agreed that as no good can result from ye ballot, ye most honorable mode of proceeding will be to tender your resignation before ye ballot is commenced. If this be your opinion, let us have an early conference, that no time may be lost in establishing a new vaccine establishment, at ye Lead of which, so far as respects ye propagation of ye cow-pox, you of course, will be placed - I offer you no condolence; - brave men act; but do not whine."
