Summary
Concerning a portrait of Benjamin Jowett and the election of Shairp as Chair of Poetry; thanking him for the check "...towards Jowett's portrait - I have had nothing to do with the arrangements, but the sum mentioned seems rather extravagant for a half-length, which is all one wants. I doubt whether a satisfactory portrait can be made of him now - the face represents the real man with him almost less than with any one I know. I trust you won't be wanted for the Poetry Chair voting. I think a withdrawal of all the other candidates in favour of Shairp will be effected. Shairp can command double the support that any one else could, but I don't expect much from his lectures;" adding that he hopes he is enjoying his holiday and asking if there is any hope of seeing him "...apart from a voting?"
