Summary
Praising his excellence as a French teacher from his time "...in a class of five or six, for several months, under your management, & I can safely say that in all that time I never witnessed such heartfelt assiduity, if I may so express it...such cheerfulness & such an admirable mixture of playfulness & grave instruction. The liveliness of your fancy & the profuse stores of classical knowledge which you appeared to possess made your instructions always agreeable & I believe always useful;" hoping that he may receive an appointment to the Edinburgh Academy; adding, in a postscript, that his brother-in-law, Mr. Harvey, who was also a pupil of the recipient of this letter, asked if he could "...add a few words in order if possible to strengthen your claims."
