The letter is undated however the Howitt's began spending winters in Rome in 1870 and Miss [Margaret] Foley died in December 1877 while traveling with the Howitts in the Tyrol.

Summary
Introducing Mr. Cashel Hoey who is visiting Rome with his daughter; adding "We are too happy in numbering my countryman among our friends - Who is loved & honoured by all who know him - his dear wife is adding to our number of deservedly popular novelists - I wish she could have accompanied Mr. Hoey for then your pleasure would have been doubled;" saying she has included a note of introduction to "our beloved Miss Foley - and shall be very grateful to you to introduce him to any celebrities who are now in Rome. I received a most interesting letter from Miss Foley last week."
