Summary
Discussing the execution of Col. [Isaac] Hayes and his intention to retaliate if the British commit such an offense again: "if the enemy should make a second attempt, I will retaliate for both immediately, having stopped all exchanges, & have now in our possession more than twenty officers (most of them taken at the late action of Eutaw ...), the whole of which are kept for the purpose of retaliation should it be necessary"; condemning the actions of Lord [Francis] Rawdon, "the principal instigator of Hayne's execution"; referring to the extension of the hospital department and the misery of the sick and wounded; mentioning that Governor [John] Rutledge assisted them with "a small supply of hospital Stores"; reporting that "light parties sent out ... by General [Francis] Marion have made a number of prisoners" in the South; stating that his "force here is too small and too sickly to attempt any thing further until reinforcements arrive"; looking forward to a victory against Lord Cornwallis, but worrying that Sir Henry Clinton may try to attack Philadelphia.
