Summary
Expressing his happiness that they are likely to prevail against Lord Cornwallis, but stating his deep regrets that the French fleet will not stay to help them in an attempt upon Charles Town; consoling himself by pointing out that if they succeed in Virginia, it will enable [Washington] to support the troops in the South more effectually; remarking on Sir Henry Clinton's preparations "for some important blow"; mentioning that he has "been concerting with Governor Burk [Thomas Burke], a plan for the reduction of Wilmington"; reporting that his troops "have been exceedingly sickly, and [their] distress and difficultys have been not a little increased for want of Medicine & Hospital Stores"; sending him a return of the troops "by which [he] will see [their] weak state"; hoping that measures will be taken to reinforce the Southern Army before all the Virignia troops leave in December; referring to Col. [Isaac] Hayne's execution, and telling him that he wrote to Lord Cornwallis about the matter but has not received a response.
