Summary
Informing him of the Battle of Eutaw Springs; reporting that "All the British troops retird to the neighbourhood of Charlestown and burnt their Stores"; noting that they captured "near a 1000 stand of arms"; telling him that the North Carolina troops "behaved with great firmness for such young Soldiers"; hoping Burke will be able to "furnish ... more drafts for [North Carolina's] Continental line as they sufferd greatly in the late action and they were not numerous before"; congratulating him on their "happy prospects in Virginia from the arrival of the French fleet," and mentioning the Marquis de Lafayette, George Washington, and Lord Cornwallis; saying that he is "sorry that Major [James] Craig succeeded in his attempt upon Newburn"; asking him to return any prisoners "being detained in North Carolina contrary to the conditions of the late Cartel agreed to for the relief of prisoners of both sides."
