Summary
Regretting the treatment of Steuben by the populace; writing, "Our operations here [South Carolina] and in Virginia have been not unlike cross purposes, the Marquis [de Lafayette] has been endeavoring to reinforce us, but has been contravened by subsequent considerations"; congratulating him "on the arrival of the French fleet in Chesapeake, and of General [George] Washington's arrival to take command in Virginia"; noting that "Lord Cornwallis must tremble for his situation"; telling him about the Battle of Eutaw Springs.
