Summary
Telling them he hopes to "collect a force to drive [the enemy] into Town" [i.e. Charleston]; noting that he was worried Lord Cornwallis was going to try to escape through North Carolina, but "late accounts" indicate "he is closely invested by an Army of near twenty thousand men and General [George] Washington at the head of them"; reporting that Count de Grasse has defeated the British fleet under Sir Samuel Hood; saying that he hopes the troops will move to the South after defeating Cornwallis to "lay siege to Charles Town"; writing that he is awaiting their arrival "to begin ... operations."
