From Azzolini Collection.
Giovanni Battista Calvi acted as an agent for Cardinal Jules Mazarin, who would eventually own thirteen paintings by Guercino. In this letter to Calvi, Guercino refers to three of them: a recently completed painting (probably the Denial of St. Peter, for which Calvi paid Guercino on 26 May 1646) as well as two works in progress (probably the Fruit vendor, paid for on 28 July 1646, and the Venus and Adonis, paid for in July 1646 and May 1647). -- Exhibition label: Guercino, virtuoso draftsman, Morgan Library & Museum, 4 October 2019-2 February 2020.
