Edward Johnston collection.
In 1913, Edward Johnston was commissioned by the London Underground enterprise to design type, signes, monograms, etc., for all their undertakings. In 1933, when this enterprise was taken over by the London Transport Board, he was consulted with respect to the changes needed for the next styles of rearranging letters, recasting signs, etc. This collection comprises the correspondence, reports, original drawings and proofs preserved by Johnston on this subject. It includes about 10 letters from the Company; 40 manuscript reports (drafts or carbons), and 65 sheets of original drawings of lettering, etc., varying from a single monogram to a "bus board notice," plus proofs.
