A portion of the manuscript, chiefly comprising several pages of transcribed quotations from various authors, and intended for insertion into Johnson's text, is written in the hand of Mrs. Piozzi and George Steevens, both of whom assisted Johnson during his preparation of The life of Pope.
The life of Pope was written by Johnson while staying in Streatham, in the London residence of the Thrale family, over an estimated 3 month period from November 1780 to February 1781, and published in 1781 as volume VII of his: Prefaces, biographical and critical, to the works of the English poets (London : J. Nichols, 1779-1781); later editions issued under the title Lives of the English poets and The lives of the most eminent English poets. Cf.
