Notes
Printed receipt for the payment of two guineas towards a subscription for Pope's translation of the Iliad, "being the first Payment to the Subscription, for the Translation of Homer's Iliads; to be delivered, in Quires, to the Bearer hereof, in the manner specify'd in the Proposals"; with the name of subscriber George Bagnall added in pen and Pope's signature at lower right.
Pope began collecting subscriptions for his translation of Homer's Iliad at the end of 1713; the work was subsequently issued in 6 installments from 1715 to 1720, with the name of George Bagnall appearing in the subscription list of the first volume of the subscriber's edition in 1715.
During the years 1700 to 1716, Pope resided at his family's home at Binfield in Berkshire, from whence he made regular trips to visit with friends and literary associates.
