With an autograph letter signed to John Roby in which he explains he is enclosing this letter as "peculiar circumstances prevented me from forwarding others on the day I intended." This letter is undated and simply addressed "Sir" but an address panel with a postmark indicates it was for "J. Roby Esq / Rochdale" and the postmark is from Wakefield on February 8, 1830. The letter asks for his opinion "...as to my chance of Success" and gives the names of several men who have written letters of introduction on his behalf; adding, in a postscript, that he is speaking in Leeds and sends "...this Weeks paper in lieu of the one mentioned on the other side."
