Notes
The drawings for "Way We Live Now" were originally attributed to Luke Fildes, [Sir (Samuel) Luke Fildes, 1843-1927] an erroneous attribution that remained from the publication of the novel in 1874 until 1947 when Michael Sadleir, a Trollope scholar and collector, wrote a letter to The Times Literary Supplement (April 5, 1947). In his letter Sadleir confessed that "my attribution of the illustrations to the first edition of "Trollope: A Bibliography (p. 143) was a mistaken one. He concludes the letter by "apologizing not only for my error but to any members of the family of the late Luke Fildes who may feel that the memory of this distinguished artist has been traduced." In 1980, N. John Hall in his book "Trollope and his Illustrators" says that the proper attribution of the illustrations "should have been obvious from the very clear initials 'LGF' on the drawings.
With a separate volume (MA 3206) containing the autograph manuscript of "Way We Live Now."
