Part of a collection of two journals kept jointly by Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne. The journals are cataloged individually.
Portions have been canceled in black ink by Sophia Hawthorne, but no pages or portions of pages have been excised.
With sketches and scribbles by the young Una and Julian throughout. Sketches appear only on blank pages or pages with Sophia's entries; pages with Nathaniel's entries are clean.
Written from 3 April 1844 to 15 September 1852. One interlopated entry (Sophia's transcription of a composition by Julian) is dated 1854.
Provenance
By descent to Julian Hawthorne; sold in 1903 by Julian to Stephen H. Wakeman; purchased by Pierpont Morgan with the Wakeman Collection in 1909.
Summary
Recording daily activities and events in the lives of the Hawthorne family, observing in detail their three children, Una, Julian and Rose. The first entry records the birth of Una, and a few later entries are by Una in her own hand.
