The Morgan holds five of the seven of Hawthorne's so-called "French and Italian notebooks." The seven notebooks are commonly known as the following volumes: MA 587 (p. 113-189 only) is known as volume 1 (p. 1-112 comprise volume 7 of his "English notebooks"); MA 588 is known as volume 2; a notebook (of ca. 88 p., covering the dates March 11 to April 22, 1858) held in the Berg Collection at the New York Public Library is known as volume 3; MA 589 is known as volume 4; a notebook (of ca. 129 p., covering the dates June 2 to July 2, 1858) held in the Huntington Library as HM 302 is known as volume 5; MA 590 is known as volume 6; and MA 591 is known as volume 7.

Summary
Collection consists of five notebooks or journals kept by Hawthorne as he traveled with his family in Europe after his appointment as United States Consul in Liverpool, England, had ended. Entries describe daily activities and travels throughout France and, primarily, Italy, and record observations and encounters. Notebooks are described in five individual records (MA 587-591).
