A collection of 47 letters, mainly to Cyrus W. Field, written by European notables, people involved in the Atlantic Telegraph Company, and others (MA 140.1-47; some letters are copies); documents related to Field's travels including passports (MA 140.49 and 140.54) and a lettre d'indication from the London bank Coutts & Co. (MA 140.51); a transcript of service messages sent by the 1858 transatlantic cable (MA 140.52); a facsimile copy of William H. Russell's The laying of the Atlantic cable: diary of events (MA 140.53) with a facsimile copy of his corrections to the document (MA 140.57); Field's daily journal during the 1866 journey across the Atlantic on the Great Eastern (MA 140.56); a printed pamphlet entitled An Address to the People of the United States by John Beeson (MA 140.48); and a traced map of the U.S. showing Indian tribes (MA 140.50).
