Written while Hawthorne was the United States consul in Liverpool (a position he held from 1853-1857), in T. J. & J. Smith's Pocket Almanack and diary for 1856, which was printed in London by Smith in 1855.

Summary
Diary entries for January to December, 1856. Brief, closely written entries record letters received from his children and wife, as well as daily activities, i.e. the entry for 9 August: "Consulate after 10. Mr. Bright (?) called. Home towards 5. Rainy day." Some accounts and notes on later pages, and Hawthorne's watch number (39620) written on preliminary page.
