Summary
Offering his "compliments of condolence upon the happy escape you lately had, of being hung, or at least impeached, for the vile attempt in which you however fortunately failed, of establishing martial law - Had the contest been carried on to extremities, I should have acted with my usual moderation and good sense by waiting to see which was the [illegible] cause, and strongest party - vive les conquerants;" asking for his opinion on whether he should send a letter to Sir David Dundas outlining his military accomplishments in hopes of getting his recommendation to command the 12th Regiment following the retirement of General [William] Picton; commenting on General Picton saying "he is certainly not dead yet - but he is very old, and it would be very unjust, and cruel were he never to die;" quoting, in a postscript, the late Col. Babbitt of the 15th Regiment "who always after dinner at the Mess would give the following toast, Come my Lads, I'll give you a Bumber toast: Here is Subordination, the First Law of Nature."
