Summary
Refusing the use of his work by a German; saying "I so greatly admired your husband, that it is a pain to me not to be able to oblige you in this matter. I can feel however that I am not showing him any want of honour, when I happen to think so differently from this inscription towards German people. His reverence for Goethe is shared by us all. But many of us cannot come as far as friendship to his modern countrymen. And I myself cannot let them have any work of mine."
