Summary
Concerning the "Disagreeable Subject of the magazines of Beef at this place;" expressing his need "to Take some other precautions for my own Safety as you seem to be willing to bring me in for a share of the blame for those Stores being Neglected - I have always been open fair and free in those Public matters which mode of Conduct I mean to pursue - and Consequently I here Transmitt to you a Certificate from Sundry Gentlemen the Subject of which you do not appear to Recollect - You say by way to exculpating yourself that you Requested a Return of the Situation of the Beef and that you did not Receive my Representation of it, until the 21st May by letter of the 18th same month -.This I must Confess is to me what Extraordinary and Really Shows a Willingness to lure me in, to be a Partner in the Neglect of those Stores - you ought to Remember, that I have Neither orders to Receive or Returns to make to you - I have not ever Charged you in Particular with Neglect of Duty in this, or any other matter - But I have Said what I now Repeat. That the magazines of provisions at this place have been gravely neglected which I am Ready to Support, fix it on whom you will, I claim no share of the Blame, not will I be saddled with it - as I well know that I have done more than my Duty Required in this matter."
