Hayley addresses the letter "My dear Hebe" and signs it "The affectionate Hermit".
Reynolds painted Miss Meyer in the character of Hebe.
There is a note in the upper left corner, in an unknown hand, "Autograph letter from Mr. Hayley the / poet to Miss Mary Meyer daughter / to the artist." Mary Meyer was the daughter of the English miniature painter Jeremiah Meyer (1735-1789).

Sending news of her brother, and inquiring about Theodora Cowper; saying "I have the pleasure to assure you that your beloved Brother is well, & happy in the Turret - accept our best wishes on the new year & as you have many acquaintances in Richmond, be so kind as to inform me, if Mrs. Theodora Cowper, who used to lodge there in the summer, has any residence there at present, or if you can learn for me where she resides;" closing the letter "Ever your invariable old Friend / The affectionate Hermit."
