Summary
Concerning the debts of his young friend Mr. Howell;" saying "...I should most willingly discharge every Debt of my lost Friend Mr. Howell, if his circumstances enabled me to do so - But so far am I from finding his effects sufficient for that purpose, I must inevitably lose near three hundred pounds myself by the untimely & calamitous Death of that gallant & amiable Officer. Indeed my pecuniary Loss on so afflicting an Event would have been much heavier than it is, had not a most liberal Friend of his in India, who knew me only by name, but who perfectly knew that I had defray'd the expences of my young Friend's military education & outset in Life very kindly collected & sent to me what he could raise from the little wreck of his property. - The Loss of my admirable Friend is the more severe in every point of view, as I have the greatest reason to believe, that had providence given him Life & Health, his Talents & Virtues must have raised Him to great Prosperity & distinction. I believe, Sir, you knew him sufficiently to agree with me in this Idea, & to join in lamenting the disastrous destiny of so promising a character."
