Summary
Commenting on the national sentiment in England; saying "No doubt all England in short the whole united Kingdoms must be on the alert & I fancy if those French Savages venture over they will meet a reception they did not expect ten months ago. The very general noble Spirit of Loyalty & Patriotism so universally evinced in these Kingdoms does much Honor to every individual & shows that they properly estimate the blessings they enjoy under the best of Kings. In this Country a most determined resolution prevails to defend His Majesty, our Laws, Religion & Liberty to the last, & our Volunteers numerous & now in a State for effective Service show a firm determination to sacrifice their lives & property for general defence. Some time ago I embodied two Companys of 80 Rank & File each, at Falkirk where there never had been one before & they are a very fine body of Men. We have every necessary appointment and are ready to move at the Shortest Notice. In the meantime My Dear Sir James I am upwards of Sixty years of age & have served His Majesty 25 years. I am sure you will think of this."
