Summary
Concerning O'Bryen's debts; saying "I have received your letter for which I am much obliged to you. Poor O'Bryen's situation is worse even than I imagined, and probably it is worse still than he represents it, not from any wish in him to deceive others or even himself, but because I know these matters too well not to suspect that the debts of a distressed Man are greater than any calculation he ever makes of them. - Notwithstanding my regard for him, and my anxious wishes to serve him, I am so situated that it is impossible for me to make the original application to those who may be able to assist in this business; but where such an application can be made by others, I can and will second it to the utmost of my power. - - In the mean time I will consult without delay, some persons whom I think the most likely to set the business afoot most effectually."
