Summary
Concerning a dispute between Hazen and General Hand; informing him that he has written to General Washington about the dispute and requested "a hearing on a Complaint of an Inquiry;" saying that if the case is settled against him he will have "but three moves left; to seek redress - with; an appeal to Congress, 2'dly the resignation of my Commission, and then an appeal to the Public, for notwithstanding the reluctance I have to Carry this matter farther; yet I cannot Prevail on my Self to Serve in an army where a Grievance whether real or Imaginary, can not be heard;" adding that "a Public Appeal to the world would be striking at the very Dignity of him that is the very Idol of this Country and who I love; reguard; and Esteem : as one of the best men Since the Creation of Adam;" expressing his hope that he will act as a mediator to "bring about a Compromise."
