Being an address, delivered before a combined meeting of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute of Arts and Letters on 27 May 1949; slightly altered by the editorial staff of Harper's Magazine for publication as an article (v. 199, pp. 31-34, August 1949). Changes made by the author are in ink, those by Harper's staff in pencil. With a letter from Russell Lynes of Harper's Magazine, by whom the manuscript was presented to the Library.
