Commonly referred to as Hawthorne's "lost notebook."
Hawthorne began this notebook on May 28th 1835. After filling the notebook through the back paste-down, he returned to the front flyleaf, where the last two entries (dated 1840 and June 29th 1841) appear. A leaf has possibly been excised after the front fly-leaf.
Part of the collection of Hawthorne's "American notebooks," which are described in four individual records.
