Summary
Regretting the London has her full complement of officers, but promising to remember Longdale Smith; saying "As to Longdale Smith, I shall consider him as under your patronage, and in the course of service I may be of use to him; at present it is impossible He can be with me as the London has all her Lieutenants...Nothing can be more precarious than military preferments. Fortune in no situation of life shews her capricious humour more than in ours. - Probably some expected or unexpected promotion may occur sooner than we imagine, and if vacancies in consequence should be made in the London, Mr. Smith's patroness should be acquainted with it."
