Gould sent this poem at the request of John Greenleaf Whittier to be included in a book published by the Female Anti-Slavery Society of Philadelphia in 1839 (cf. Janet Gray's Race and Time: American Women's Poetics from Antislavery to Racial Modernity, U. Iowa, 2004, p. 66).
