Summary
Recruiting an actor to the company; saying "Things have been - and are still and must remain so during a continuance of the uncertain state of the country - very bad indeed and though at the other House they cut a better figure than we do yet I really believe it is more in shew than reality. But be that as it may - we want you and I beg if you can do it that you will let me underline you on Monday for that day sennight the character of course to be of your own choosing. With regard to Engagement I thought it settled from the beginning for three years from the end of the present season at 14, 15 and 16 with a Benefit at a time correspondent to the salary. As to the present season it shall be settled by yourself. Only come and let us make much of you -for we depend much upon your making much for us. I seized upon a few leisure minutes while in waiting at Spencers for Mr. Sheridan to write this or perhaps I should either have forgotten or have had no other opportunity to do it until after the Post hour and this will at any rate [illegible] to me an answer on Monday morning when I trust you will make me happy by saying as I shall do now with the greatest truth & sincerity my dear Sir that / I am / yours to command."
