Summary
Written after the Battle of Monocacy, Maryand, Grant informs Sherman that the Confederate Army around Washington may number 25,000 but it will be weakened by fortifying and using their supplies; instructs Sherman to use whatever he captures in his campaign near Atlanta, and Grant indicates he will work to lessen the number of troops needed for defenses near Washington and may "detach from here for other enterprises."
