Summary
Returning his address with his "hasty comments" and saying he admires "...the address enormously. As to subscription, I prepared you for a very feeble announcement : & I can only give you £100. It shall be payable when & where you like - I have almost wholly given up the plan of pledging future years. I should however add, that I regard your scheme as a rich one & not a needy one;" discouraging him from going with the Church Missionary Society "...in your infancy, even though you are as strong as Hercules. The leanings of my mind about Oxford are much the same as those you describe : but every step in that matter will require to be well considered. I trust your health is improving."
