Notes
Lady Morris Gore is described in Volume I of The Memoirs of R. W. Elliston, Comedian (by George Raymond) as a friend of the Elliston family in Bath. Given the provenance of this item, the subject of the letter and the personal connection, it is likely that this letter is addressed to R. W. Elliston.
A note in pencil on the letter dates it to 1803-1804. Elliston was acting as stage-manager for the Haymarket Theatre during that period, so this dating is feasible but cannot be confirmed.
Removed from an extra-illustrated volume from the series Dramatic Memoirs (PML 9505-9528).
Provenance
Purchased from Henry Sotheran & Co., London, 1891.
Summary
Asking that Miss Smith be engaged to play at the Haymarket Theatre for a few nights; saying that she has had the pleasure of meeting with her several times and that she is confident Miss Smith will succeed in "elegant comedy"; writing that Miss Smith has received tempting offers from Ireland for the summer, but she has deferred her response for the moment.
