Summary
Saying he should have written from Boulogne to inform her of his arrival in France, but he was too busy seeing the town and the people; describing the passage across the English Channel and telling her that he has discovered "a system for the avoidance of sickness in short voyages"; noting that his knowledge of French "for practical purposes" is "not what it might be"; mentioning that he would rather live in Paris than in London and asking her to advise William [Wilkie Collins] "against committing himself to a London lodging before he has tried Paris again."
