A note in an earlier record suggests this letter is written to Home's son John. John Home was serving at the time as Substitute Keeper of the Signet under Hugh Warrender who succeeded John Davidson as Clerk of the Signet on Davidson's death in 1797.
Summary
Concerning the deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dalrymple and saying he had written to Mrs. Home "...that she should not go near the house in Hanover [illegible] till Doctor Home had given orders that the house should be fumigated, cleansed and made safe for us to live in : that I was to set out on Friday the 26th & come to Edinburgh as fast as the weather and the condition of the roads would permit me; for the weather & the road was never so bad, since I became a traveller;" asking for help in securing him a place to stay.
