Summary
Sending him "...a copy of the new "Handbook of Heraldry" by J.E. Cussans, which possesses an especial interest in being the first work published in England on the subject which treats of American Heraldry. It might be considered that in the Republic under which you live, wherein individual merit is more esteemed than dignity of birth, that the study of such a subject would receive no attention. This, however, is not the case; for a desire is daily becoming more manifest among the present generation of Americans of finding out particulars connected with the history of their ancestors, who, driven from their own country, founded another nation across the Atlantic. A work which shall serve as a guide to the Family Historian cannot, therefore, fail of being acceptable, and such a one I trust the "Handbook of Heraldry" will be found."
