Summary
Asking him to read the proof of the technical chapter of his book on bookbinding; saying "I will only ask you to remark any statements, which are absolutely incorrect, or misleading. - There are doubtless many things in it, which you will not agree with. I have taken immense pains with the book : and I think I have treated the subject as a 'fine art', for the first time in English ; at least in a form which is largely historical. I am therefore particularly anxious not to make technical mistakes & so bring down on my head the censure of the professional & Philistine bookbinder. If you would give me the pleasure of dining with me here, any evening this week : I can promise you an excellent dinner : & that would save you from writing any remarks you might be good enough to make to me. Trains from Hammersmith to the Temple are frequent : & I shall be delighted to see you at 7 o'c : What evening you please;" adding, in a postscript, "Please mark my proof, which I enclose, in pencil."
