Summary
Concerning his appointment to command the Roebuck; saying "Considering the many unpleasant circumstances that now attend the reputed destination of your Ship, I scarce know how to congratulate you upon your appointment to the Roebuck; unless it be that your nomination to the command without a furious endeavor to obtain it, may be esteemed an acknowledgement of your abilities for the particular Service intended. Tho' I do not forsee any occassion to make use of your obliging offers of a place in your Ship for any Recommendation at my Hands, I am equally indebted for the favor : and more especially, for the consideration you have had the goodness to express for my wishes in respect to Lieut. Ord. He is a young Man that must depend for his advancement upon his abilities : in whose success I much interest myself; and to whom, your countenance & civilities, if he is as steady as I fully trust he will prove in his endeavors to merit them, will be acknowledged by Lord Hyde no less than / your sincere & o'bed / hble Service / Howe."
