Binding: 
Modern full brown goatskin, blind-tooled in a retrospective style, over paper boards (28 x 20 cm), sewn on 4 supports by Riviere & Son for Bennett (about May 1896). Plain paper pastedowns and endleaves; decorative endbands; gilt edges.
Inscriptions/Markings: 

Hand decoration: Rubrication not required. Woodcut initials with yellow wash, woodcuts with pale yellow, red, blue wash and gold leaf. Annotations: Contemporary notations sporadically throughout text, washed (visible but not legible under UV).

Boswell Family, 18th-century inscriptions in 2 hands (partially abraded and overwritten, Bennett cat. suggests hand might be that of James Boswell (1740-1795) but does not really seem to match) citing David Boswell (d. 1493 -- could not own this book) and Thomas Boswell (d. 1513) of Auchinleck's ownership of the volume in the 15th/16th century (front endleaf 3 recto), through inheritance to: Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck (1706-1782), Auchinleck Library, Vraye Foy stamp (front endleaf 3 recto), throught inheritance to Julia Boswell Mounsey (d. 1905), Auchinleck sale, Sotheby's, 23 June 1893, lot 826 for 9.5.0 to Leighton; unidentified English sale catalogue description, lot 458 (front endleaf 1 recto); Richard Bennett (1849-1930), armorial bookplate (front endleaf 1 recto) and purchase notes: No. 218, 19/5/96 and price code: rne/-/- +com, 8 leaves of table a/s/-, Binding etc. wy/-/- = le/s/- +com (front pastedown); Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), purchased with the Bennett collection, 1902.
