Notes
Printed in Eggestein's type 4:99b.
The Karlsruhe copy has a purchase inscription dated April 1472.
Collation: [*² 1¹⁰ 2¹⁰(+7*: "cum [er]g[o] iam") 3-4¹⁰ 5⁸(+3*: "Nos quide[m]" and 3**: "Sexagesima") 6-8¹⁰ 9¹⁰(+8*: "Unde cum") 10-12¹⁰ 13⁸(+4*: "oscula[n]s" and 4**: "discipul[is]") 14-15¹⁰ 16⁸(+6*: "Sed quia"); 17¹⁰(+7*: "cur no[n]," ±[17]/2) 18-28¹⁰ 29⁶]: 290 leaves, leaves [16]/8 and [29]/6 blank.
Paper format: Chancery folio
Rhodes (Oxford Colleges, 978) describes additional printing in red on [1]/3r.
Quire [*] is table of rubrics.
A quire of four blank leaves precedes [*] and a blank bifolium after [29] in many copies.
Leaves [9]/8* and [16]/6* are half-leaves with one printed column.
PML copy leaf dimensions: 31 x 21.4 cm.
PML copy missing 3 leaves: *1-2 (table of rubrics) and [16]/8 (blank).
PML copy has leaves [9]/8* incorrectly bound after leaf [9]/7 and [16]/6* after leaf [16]/5.
PML copy with 4 blank leaves preceeding quire [*] with manuscript index added.
BMC records leaf "130" as a cancel, which is likely one of the two leaves added to quire [13] in PML copy. With this cancel, the total leaf count of the PML copy would be 289, as in others.
Binding
Modern calf, by Deborah Evetts, 1972.
Inscriptions/Markings
Hand decoration: Illuminated initial on leaf [1]/1r, red and blue lombards and paragraph marks, red capital strokes, rubrics, headlines, and foliation. Rubricator wrote at end of text, "VIVA LARGILIFRA" (leaf [29]/5r). Annotations: Contemporary manuscript quire numbers in bottom margin of first recto, some trimmed, and manuscript signatures, mostly trimmed. Contemporary table of contents added to last two leaves of first four blank fly leaves; these four blanks have same bull's head-Tau watermark as main text. Contemporary marginal annotations and corrections in several hands.
Provenance
Inscription, abraded (leaf [1]/1r); unidentified Jesuit inscription (leaf [1]/1r); Giuseppe Martini, lot 221 in unidentified catalogue [before 1920] (description attached to rear board of former binding, now photocopy in file); J.P. Morgan, Jr. (1867-1943), purchased from Martini, Aug. 1920.
