16th-century Italian (Rome) brown morocco, gold tooled with interlace border and foliate ornaments, with central armorial: sun, 3 fleur-de-lis in chief (perhaps Stamarini family of Bologna), attributed to Niccolò Franzese.
Inscriptions/Markings
Contemporary notations on the dates for the reigns of Francis I and Henri, the pontificates of Paul III and Julian III, and "Die 10. septembris classis imperatoris expugnavit Africam .s. oppidum huius nominis Africa" (rear endleaf 1 recto).
