16th-century Italian (Rome) brown morocco gold tooled with interlace border, foliate ornaments and veritcal medallion at center with Apollo & Pegasus, attributed by Anthony Hobson to Marcantonio Guillery; Nixon attributed to the Farnese Binder.
Provenance
The Apollo & Pegasus bindings were previously thought to belong to Demetrio Carnevari or Per Luigi Farnese. Giovanni Battista Grimaldi (b. about 1524), binding (see Hobson, Apollo and Pegasus, pp. 49ff); Pierpont Morgan, purchased from Rahir, 1910.
