Binding: 
German (or English by Dutch craftspeople?) 17th-century pierced and engraved silver over silver-gilt plates, decorated with floral and two stags; 2 silver clasps on the inner side of which are etched the personal crest and arms of Oliver Cromwell, and the words "Olivar Pro". A small section of the back panel has been broken off, including part of the deer's antler and a flower. Note in volume by Belle Greene indicates the binding was identified by G.D. Hobson in a letter of 14 Aug. 1946.

Oliver Cromwell, armorial and crest on inside of clasps, through inheritance to: Thomas Belasye (1627-1700), Earl Fauconberg, inscription: "Lord Fauconberg Booke 1677" (front endleaf 2 recto), Belasye was the husband of Cromwell's daughter Mary (through descent into the Russell family); Sir John Russell of Thruxton's Court, Hereford (by intermarriage with the Cromwell family), through descent to: Thomas Artemidorus Russell (1810-1863), sold it to William White, bookseller, who sold it to Rev. E. Cuthbert, 16 Nov. 1851, who subsequently bequeathed it to Rev. Samuel Charles Wilkes (d. 1872); J.P. Morgan, Jr., purchased from Bernard Quaritch, 1920.
