Perspectives from a Conservator and a Curator

Malick Sidibé (1936–2016) opened his studio in Bamako, the capital city of Mali, around the time the nation gained independence following French colonial rule. His photographs show modern West African life and are often described as depicting postcolonial euphoria.

At the first international symposium devoted to the artist, scholars explore Gillot’s work and career in the context of the Paris art world, uncovering his professional network and assessing his contribution to changing tastes and his impact on the next generation of art

Renowned for his beloved and acclaimed children’s books, Maurice Sendak (1928–2012) was also an avid music and opera lover. In the late 1970s, he embarked on a successful second career as a designer of sets and costumes for the stage.
